I wrote an earlier 5-star review of this collection, which I have withdrawn after reading the review by Ekkehard Rohwedder and doing my own checking. He is right that this set is mainly a collection of warmed-over tracks from other albums by the X5 Group and Amazon bearing the "99 Most Essential" brand. This includes the recent "99 Most Essential Relaxing" set, as Mr Rohwedder mentions, but also earlier collections in the series.

Of the 99 tracks here, I believe only 26 are works that have not appeared before in other collections. A further 15 are tracks for which the works have appeared in other collections, but the versions included here are different recordings by different artists.

That means that at least 58 tracks of the 99 are outright copied and repackaged for sale in this "new" set. And I don't have all the previous "99 Most Essential" sets by any means -- the full number of repackaged tracks could be higher.

I was aware that a number of the pieces had appeared before, but after a cursory look I believed they were mainly recordings by different artists. I can accept this completely, as everyone who collects classical music ends up with umpteen versions of the same works in different recordings. Comparative listening to different artistic interpretations of the same work is one of the joys of classical music. However, I was mistaken -- the tracks mostly are outright repeats.

I do still feel I got my two dollars' worth just from the Piazzola "History of the Tango" and the complete set of Villa-Lobos Guitar Preludes (although it turns out two of those recordings had appeared in earlier sets). Other new recordings here include the complete "Chants d'Espagne" by Isaac Albéniz and the Rodrigo Guitar Concerto -- of which only one movement has appeared in earlier sets. The Beethoven Pastoral Symphony is also a new recording (i.e. by a different artist) not included in earlier sets.

Small comfort, however. While these sets do offer high-quality recordings at a terrific price, X5 and Amazon should be ashamed of themselves for pawning off such a vast quantity of reused music as new.

I've only purchased one other of the "99 Most..." series from Amazon, but regardless of what might be duplicated from other collections, for $1.99 how can I go wrong? The music is beautiful, some of my favorite composers and orchestras. The sound quality is excellent. I plan to listen to it as background music during the day while I'm working and perhaps while I'm sitting back reading a book. It would also be nice in the background during dinner.

Some of my favorites from the collection are: Dvorák, Antonín: Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95, "From the New World" Largo, Carnival Of The Animals: The Swan (Le Cygne), Where The Lemons Blossom, Op. 364: Waltz, and Five Preludes for Solo Guitar. Actually there is so much good music here that it's hard to choose which I like best.

If you like classical music and love to listen to a lot of different things rather than one whole symphony, how can you afford not to buy this at this price? Even as a sampler to see if you want to buy the whole of some of these works, it's a good deal.

不知从何时起，开始喜欢上了古典音乐。整个夏天，都在听交响乐和协奏曲。莫扎特、柴可夫斯基、肖邦、拉赫玛尼诺夫、斯美塔娜、李斯特、约翰色特劳斯……这些古典音乐大师的音乐作品，每晚都被我重复的播放。现在所提及的西方音乐实际上是从十六世纪末开始，由其是十七世纪到十八世纪，这一期间，音乐史上称为巴洛克时期。在巴洛克时期前，西方音乐大至轮廓是：公元805年为早期的中世纪，开始了复调音乐。公元1000年为罗马式艺术，发明了谱表。公元1150年为后期中世纪，是早期哥特式风格。公元1300年为晚期哥特式风格，是新音乐的变革时期。公元1450年为文艺复兴时期，兴起了另一次新音乐的变革。直至公元1750年巴赫去世，则为巴洛克时期的结束。再其后则相继为古典派音乐、浪漫派音乐、民族乐派、印象派及现代各种音乐流派。

其实西方的古典派音乐是十八世纪下半叶与十九世纪初流行于欧洲的一种音乐流派，这种音乐的风格与以前的巴罗克音乐有很大的差别。巴赫和亨德尔所惯用的数字低音的复调写作方法，到了十八世纪下半叶就已经变成了过时的东西，在古典派音乐中则是主调音乐处于绝对优势。音乐从简单旋律发展到复调音乐，又从复调音乐发展到突出主旋律，和声为辅的历史阶段。这并不是元古简单音乐的反复重现，而是更高水平。古典音乐的主旋律曲调有着级其重要的地位，低音往往用主音或属音反复演奏，或用简单的分解和弦。在和声上行成以主、属、下属为中心的功能体系。这一时期，人们不想听沉重的音乐，而要求更明朗更轻快的东西。这也可以说是启蒙精神要求的一个方面。因而可以说，情绪明快、结构严谨、音乐语言清晰、音乐手法精炼，是这一时期音乐的重要特点。此时的奏鸣曲体裁得到高度发展，交响乐的发展达到了高度的艺术水平.。

说起古典音乐，人们很自然的会想起被称为“维也纳三杰”的三位古典乐派代表人：海顿、莫扎特和贝多芬.。而我最爱听的音乐，就是由莫扎特作曲的古典音乐。因为，Mozart的音乐很浪漫，更偏向于欢快，不像贝多芬的作品，沉重而荡气回肠。这恰恰就是两位音乐大师的风格不同之处，也是他们不一样的魅力所在。舒曼曾说过，莫扎特的音乐是无法描述的。“莫扎特即音乐”，这似乎是赞叹莫扎特遗产的最恰当的词汇.。
很喜欢听Mozart的《安魂曲》，不知道为何会喜欢这首音乐，但是我却深深的被它悲凉的唱腔和悠远的旋律所吸引。《G大调弥撒》给了我一种全新的音乐感觉，让我犹如身临教堂一般。还有许许多多的维也纳大师的音乐作品，我还没有来得及全部欣赏，但是此时，已经沉溺于古典音乐之中了。

但是，此时，我还在考虑这一些问题。那就是：为什么Mozart与贝多芬于几百年前就能写出这么好的曲子？为什么今天许多商业垃圾还在大量金钱和设备上创造出无病呻吟的垃圾？
