Review Summary: Overall, Abandon All Ships! are just another band that enjoy doing what they do; make music and experiment but they are simply just another band. Don't get me wrong their music is enjoyable but that's not enough to get far in the REAL music industry

Where do I honestly start? Oh I know…

Abandon All Ships! are a Canadian Post-Hardcore/Hardcore/Trancecore six piece band and they hit the scene in 2006 and realeased their debut EP in 2009, and in 2010 they signed to Rise Records, Insert *Fanboy and Fangirl yelp* here.

Theres five songs on the EP so I'll do a brief track by track review, so here it goes:

1. Pedestrians Is Another Word For Speedbumb:
The synths/techno beat comes in loud and clear letting the listener know what this band are all about. The electronic breakdowns and the pace of the song is generally good; it's a good opener. Personally I'm not keen on the screamed vocals (done by Angelo Aiti ) and the clean vocals are autotuned, seems all too familiar? I'll let you make your descion on that.

2. Shake Your AAS:
The start of the track is supposed to be humourous, I didn't appreciate it the first time so hearing it over and over again does grate abit. Anyway it's just like the track before when it comes down to substance; good use of tech', nice use of synths and guitar and it has an upbeat vibe. However what makes this track for me is around the 2:19 mark, the breakdown is pure electronic and too put it simple it's really, really cool.

3. Megawacko:
With the hardcore genre comes stupid titles and this is one of them, having silly titles doesn't make your band any different or COOL for that matter. The song starts off pretty well and then goes downhill due to the lyrics, lyrically this song is pretty poor and so is the EP as a whole but it can be forgiven for the awesome breakdowns and trance beats.

4. Brendon's Song:
It starts off like your normal post-hardcore song; pretty bland then around the 2 minute mark it makes an impression but I can't help but feel it's too late. Normally if a song doesn't capture my attention within the 1st minute it normally gets skipped but in saying that this song has a decent ending, the synth is used perfectly.

5. In Your Dreams Brah!:
Just like the song before it, it starts off like your typical hardcore song with the guitar and drums chugging away then the synths come in and spices it up a little. They gradually fade into the background as the guitar and drums take centre stage along with the vocals. Once again, around the 2 minute mark the trance comes in and for me saves the song. If it's one thing about this EP its that the trance/synth/beats have been timed just right and sound good too.

I can't help but think this genre 'ship' should have been abandoned long ago...

Geeving的,作者Travio
Review Summary: Abandon All Ships is a decent band and Geeving is a great 1st album to kickstart their career. This is another band that combines electronica and Post-Hardcore but be assured that this band does is very well.

Alright I want to start this review off with this idea. Most people do not like the idea of throwing techno and hardcore metal in a can, spin it around, and create something that isn't fertilizer. I'm going to tell these haters that this new genre of music has created an enormous fan base around the world and you can not stop it. So these annoying critics can go cry and listen to Disturbed or something. We can all thank the early work of Attack Attack! For being the first band to experiment with these two formulas.

I think Abandon All Ships is a great band to listen to if you enjoy this new form of music. They do a wonderful job of combining the elements of techno and heavy metal. I really don't know why people are giving Geeving disappointing ratings. I've been reading user's reviews and most people say that the lyrics are very generic. I do not see that at all. I see variety and deep meaning in this album. "Sin is the anchor holding you down" and "God is the captain change the direction"( found in the track Take One Last Breath. ) These lyrics are very meaningful. Keep in mind that this is the band's first album and I am sure that their future work will be even more deeper and mature.

What I don't appreciate about this album are numerous things. I don't enjoy the vocals. The clean vocalist( Martin Broda )sings with a voice enhancer, even in concert. Which I find Humorous. Is his voice really that horrible? I also dislike the screamer( Angelo Aita )I just dislike his screaming. Maybe his voice will get better as the band progresses. Overall the vocals are not that horrible, I guess it could be worse. The instruments are a little dull too, I would like to hear the drums louder and taking over the music with powerful bass.

This band also has Christian based lyrics but if you listen closely you can hear frequent swearing and suggestive themes in the lyrics. Which In my opinion, I don't understand fooling listeners with Christian titles and lyrics, and then thrashing it with obscene lyrics. You can't have the best of both worlds.

Overall this band is not bad at all and Geeving is a great way to kickstart there career with a good 1st album. This band likes to have fun and fist-pump or whatever... But they know how to rock out! "Bro My God, Geeving, and Family Goretrait" are good heavy songs to listen to but don't forget the deep meaningful tracks! "Guardian Angel, Heaven, and Take One Last Breath" are great songs to think about. This band has variety and I see potential in these guys on there next albums. So Abandon All Ships fans, have your fingers crossed!

Review Summary: With their sophomore effort, Abandon All Ships cross the line from niche to just plain awful.

When they released their debut full length album 'Geeving', Abandon All Ships defined the phrase "you either love them or you hate them". While gaining a sizeable fanbase, Abandon All Ships were not short of hate. And who can blame them? Their mixture of Europop and trance with chuggy metalcore certainly aimed for a niche audience. Now they're back with follow-up sophomore effort 'Infamous'. And it's a release that, if anything, will lose their current fans rather than gain new ones.

In fact, after listening to the first two tracks, 'Good Old Friend' and 'Infamous', you could pretty much summarise the entire album. The cheesy Europop influences are back, mixed with similar uninspired metalcore. An extra addition to the mix is a hint of rap influence; the growled vocals come at a much faster pace and 'Infamous' even features rap group A-Game for a brief moment. The album tries to do too much at once and the final result ends up being an overproduced mess.

As an album, 'Infamous' has a clear weakness, and that's the more metal side of the equation. Expectedly, the guitars are anything but technical, refusing to escape from their comfort zone of breakdowns and simple riffs. But what really lets things down is the growling. It was clear from 'Geeving' that the unclean vocals needed to be improved and, on this follow up, they've actually gotten worse. Angelo's growls sound incredibly unnatural an forced. They are simply unpleasant to listen to, and eventually make listening to the album just plain unbearable. 'American Holocaust' is almost unlistenable.

On the flipside, the clean vocals have marginally improved. There are still some sections layered in way too much autotune, like 'Forever Lonely', but there are moments, such as in 'Good Old Friend', where the autotune is toned down a great amount. The vocals are hardly impressive, but for a band with a bad reputation for their over-reliance on autotune, moments like these make the album refreshing. The track 'August', which focusses on clean vocals rather than screams, ends up being the absolute highlight of the album.

The styles end up not mixing together very well at all. While the chorus of 'Infamous' is undeniably catchy, it gets ruined by the headache-inducing screams, and the rap bridge of the song seems out of place and shoe-horned in simply for the sake of it. There's simply too much mashing together, and rather than a beautiful unification of styles, it turns into a clustered mess.

'Geeving' provoked a mixed reaction but certainly catapulted Abandon All Ships into the spotlight. 'Infamous' is an album that ends up being itself infamous for all the wrong reason, that should see the band slowly back away from the spotlight, and hopefully stay away. It has redeeming qualities (see 'August'), but there's just not enough to save this disaster of an album.

Review Summary: Wildly flailing away in the hope of stumbling upon a successful balance. Sorry, you're not a winner!

Ever since Enter Shikari apologized to us for not being winners in 2006, it feels as if hundreds of bands have attempted to emulate such a successful balance of electronica and post-hardcore. Considering that the Englishmen themselves struggled to follow up their first physical single, it should come as no surprise that synthcore act after electronicore act have subsequently delivered albums ranging from sub-par to unlistenable clusterfucks. Promisingly, Michigan sextet I See Stars – another group who had previously released three barely passable LPs – stepped it up in 2013 with ‘New Demons’; an album which proved that the genre could juxtapose such disparate elements to sustain tunes that crossed the four minute barrier. Could their Canadian counterparts Abandon All Ships overcome their reality show roots to replicate such success on their third LP ‘Malocchio’?

While containing a moderately catchy chorus courtesy of clean vocalist Martin Broda, lead single and album opener ‘Reefer Madness’ suggests the answer to the aforementioned question is unfortunately in the negative. Doing nothing to break away from the tired formula of screamed verses and clean choruses, the Toronto quintet deliver another messy album where they wildly flail away in the hope of stumbling upon a successful balance, to no avail. As per usual, practically every track provides at least a fleeting moment of inspiration, but each is brought down by one obnoxious element or another. On occasion, it is the loud, in-your-face clubby synths, but more often than not it is Angelo Aita’s nondescript, predominantly unintelligible screams, which lack the necessary power and emotion to anchor these ten songs.

From a musical perspective, it is disappointing that apart from the slowed down section of ‘Trapped’, there isn’t a great deal of experimentation with tempo here. Nor – with the exception of a handful of intros – is there much atmosphere infused into proceedings. As ‘Malocchio’ progresses, Abandon All Ship’s metalcore foundations give way to their electronic tendencies. ‘Alive’ stretches the blueprint the furthest; Featuring Canadian producer AstroKrat, it is ready made for the Ibiza crowd, even making a belated toe-dip into Skrillex’s popular brand of dubstep! Of course, with the synth and keys of Sebastian Cassisi-Nunez taking precedence, Kyler Browne’s guitar-work – and to a lesser extent, Melvin Murray’s drumming – is reduced to mere background noise when not in full breakdown mode. Disappointingly, there is barely a striking riff or exciting solo to be heard.

From the heavily auto-tuned clean vocals of their debut (which are wisely dialled down here) to the rap and R&B embellishments of latest release ‘Infamous’, Abandon All Ships have admirably continued to tinker with their formulaic brand of trancecore. That continues on ‘Malocchio’, and while the clubby style actually suits them, the results are pretty much the same, since the band rarely approach balancing all of the varying elements satisfyingly. They come closest on ‘Trapped’ and closer ‘Paradise’, but even then there is the nagging feeling that the choruses simply aren’t infectious enough to make the tunes memorable. Abandon All Ships may be steadily improving their consistency, but it still feels as if they are as far away from Enter Shikari’s benchmark song as they were when they entered that reality show back in 2009. They could very well be heading in the right direction, but for now: Sorry, you’re not a winner.

Recommended Tracks: Trapped, Paradise & Bloor Street West.
