x
IWandered Lonely as a Cloud
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars thatshine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; butthey
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed -- and gazed -- but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

William Wordsworth
Format/Meter
Rhymed Stanzas inIambic Tetrameter
"I wanderedlonely as a Cloud" has a fairly simple form that fits its simple andfolksy theme and language. It consists of four stanzas with six lines each, fora total of 24 lines.
The rhyme schemeis also simple: ABABCC. The last two lines of each stanza rhyme like the end ofa Shakespeare sonnet, so each stanza feels independent and self-sufficient.This is called a "rhyming couplet." There aren't even any slantrhymes to trick you. Here's the first stanza with the rhyme scheme labeled:
I wandered lonely asa Cloud (A)
That floats on high o'er vales and Hills, (B)
When all at once I saw a crowd, (A)
A host, of golden Daffodils; (B)
Beside the Lake, beneath the trees, (C)
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. (C)

The meter is iambictetrameter, which just means that each line has four ("tetra") iambs. An iamb is a short, unaccented syllable followed by a longer, accentedsyllable. Below is an example. We broke up each of the iambs and put theaccented syllables in bold font.
I wan|-deredlone|-ly as | a cloud
That floats | on high | o’er vales| and hills.

The meter is regularand consistent, especially compared to many of Wordsworth’s other poems, whichhave a more conversational sound. All in all, the poem is as tidy and orderly.
Theme
1.     Nature’s beauty uplifts the human spirit. Lines 15, 23,and 24 specifically refer to this theme.
2.     People sometimes fail to appreciate nature's wonders asthey go about their daily routines. Lines 17 and 18 suggest this theme.
3.     Nature thrives unattended. The daffodils proliferate insplendor along the shore of the lake without the need for human attention.
4.     In order to understand oneselfand one's place in the universe, one must connect with nature.
Figure of Speech
1 Line 1 contains a simile comparing the narrator to a cloud, making him atone with nature. The comparison to the cloud suggests free floating anddrowsiness. The narrator is relaxed. A "host of golden daffodils"attracts his attention.
2 Line 7 uses a simile to compare the procession ofdaffodils to the eternity of the stars in the milky way, creating a linkbetween Nature and the Universe which links the narrator to the Universe.
3 Line 9 uses hyperbole to express the vastness ofthe vision, an eternal vastness perhaps: "They stretched in never-endingline."
4 Line 12 uses personification. The daffodils havebecome a living entity.
5 Line 13 uses personification and comparison. Thewaves danced too, but they do not produce the glee the daffodils have created.
6 In stanza 3 the narrator admits that at the time of theincident, he had no idea of the impact.
7 Stanza 4 relates that thesubconscious and the soul receive the greater impact from the experience as thedaffodils "flash upon that inward eye."
Stanza 1
Alliteration: lonely as a cloud(line 1).
Simile: Comparison (using as) of the speaker's solitariness to thatof a cloud (line 1).
Personification: Comparison of the cloud to a lonely human. (line 1)
Alliteration: high o'er valesand Hills (line 2).
Alliteration: When all at once (line 3). (Note that the w and ohave the same consonant sound.)
Personification/Metaphor: Comparison of daffodils to a crowd of people(lines 3-4).
Alliteration: golden Daffodils(line 4).
Alliteration: Beside the Lake, beneath thetrees,
Personification/Metaphor: Comparison of daffodils to dancing humans (lines4, 6).
